Defense Secretary Perry reported on his recent trip to Key West and Guantanamo to assess the ongoing migration of Cubans. He stressed that the United States was discouraging Cubans from boarding rafts/boats to reach the United States. He said the Coast Guard and Navy were conducting a search and rescue operation about 25 to 30 miles off the coast of Cuba to save Cubans who did venture out on boats/rafts. At the time, 9,000 Cubans had been picked up for transport to Guantanamo. Following the briefing, Perry joined Attorney General Janet Reno, Undersecretary of State Peter Tarnoff, and Commissioner of the INS Doris Meissner in taking media questions on various aspects of the Cuban migration issue. close
