President Clinton, Ambassadors Kantor and Hills spoke at a rally in support of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, or GATT, which is now before Congress. President Clinton said that the great challenge of our age economically is to figure out how we can create jobs and increase incomes without adding to inflation. The president discussed his administration’s effort to lower the deficit, increase investment and education training and technology, and expand trade and investment. He also noted that when the GATT is finally implemented, it will add up to $200 billion to the economy every year. close
