President Bill Clinton told reporters that his administration had moved one step closer toward gaining broad bipartisan support for the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) treaty. He explained that an understanding had been reached with Senator Bob Dole (R-KS) and reaffirmed the protection of United States sovereignty. The president explained that the World Trade Organization would be accountable and fair, and would meet U.S. expectations. After the president departed, the senators and United States Trade Representative Mickey Kantor made brief remarks and took a few questions from the press. close
