President Clinton, Vice President Gore, and others discussed their support of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). James Miller III, Chair, Citizens for a Sound Economy, Board of Directors, is the former director of OMB in the Reagan administration. Congress votes on GATT this week. President Clinton asserted that without the capacity to expand trade and to generate more economic opportunities, the United States will not be able to fulfill its global responsibilities or its responsibilities to the American people. The president argued that the GATT agreement will not lead to the demise of the lower-wage working people in America, as some GATT opponents have alleged. “If we move and lead, we will open other markets to our products,” he said. close
