President Clinton, the first lady and their daughter Chelsea shared the lighting of the National Christmas Tree before a large outdoor audience. Holiday music was performed by singers Aretha Franklin and Trish Yearwood and by Metropolitan Opera singer Richard Leech. Weatherman Willard Scott played Santa. The tree was 40 feet tall, grown on a farm in York, Pennsylvania. Former President Calvin Coolidge was the first president to light the tree in 1923. close
