Ms. Myers announced that National Security Adviser Lake will lead a delegation of senior administration officials to Africa from December 13-22. They will visit eight countries, including Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Zambia, Angola, Benin, and Senegal. Lake will meet with officials of regional organizations, including the Organization of African Unity in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She also indicated that President Clinton has invited Bulgarian President Zhelev to meet with him in Washington on February 13. They’re expected to discuss the situation in the Balkans, Bulgaria’s integration into the expanding community of democratic countries. Media questions centered on these topics: whether the president plans an upcoming trip to Africa; the timetable for selecting a new surgeon general and agriculture secretary; deliberations on the middle-class tax cut; the president’s goals on budgetary matters, agency consolidations, and program cuts; commitment of 25,000 U.S. ground troops to support the United Nations in Bosnia; and expanding NAFTA to include Chile. close
