Several African-American leaders talked to reporters about the black community’s expectations of the new Republican-controlled Congress on a variety of issues including welfare, affirmative action, crime and safe neighborhoods, economic empowerment and education. Questions from reporters asked about the timing of the meeting, fear of the Republican Party taking over the House, the Crime bill, the Contract with America and possible rollbacks of Affirmative Action and other programs. close
