Committee members heard testimony on how the law enforcement grants bill will be considered when it reaches the House floor, including the debate time, amendments, and procedureal motions. The bill is the main component of the Republican anti-crime initiative. It authorizes ten billion dollars in grants and gives local authorities the choice of spending the money on hiring more police or to use it on other anti-crime programs. This would replace the 1994 Crime Bill’s outlay of nearly nine billion dollars for new police officers over six years. close
