Committee members reviewed a bill making changes in the federal food stamp program in a process called a mark up. As drafted, the bill caps overall federal spending on food stamps, controls increases in benefits, requires some recipients to work, and aims to lower food stamp fraud. Republicans say they hope to save up to $16 billion over the next 5 years by making changes in the program. Food stamp coupons are currently used by about 27 million persons each month. close
