Current news events and political issues were examined through reviews of the morning newspapers; interviews with journalists, newsmakers and legislators; and viewer telephone calls, faxes and electronic mail. In the first segment, Mr. Stuart talked about current issues, including the current bitterness of political discourse in Washington. In the newspaper roundtable, Mr. MacNeil and Mr. Lehrer talked about current headlines, including the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. Robert MacNeil’s last day on the MacNeil/Lehrer Newshour was Friday. In the next segment, Mr. Cardenas and Mr. Pertierri debated whether the U.S. should open its relations with Cuba. In a taped interview, Mr. Kemp, the commission chair, talked about the goals of the Economic Growth and Tax Reform Commission established by the Republican congressional leadership. In the last segment, Mr. Cain and Mr. Faris, two members of this fourteen person commission, talked about their work so far and their goals for the next few months. A clip of Mr. Cain asking President Clinton about the economy at a town hall meeting was shown. close
