Before departing for a trip to Mexico, Secretary Christopher, Mr. McLarty and Undersecretary Eisenstadt spoke about the U.S. commitment to create a free trade area of the Americas by 2005 involving as many nations as possible and intermediary steps such as the inclusion of Chile in NAFTA. They emphasized that NAFTA demonstrates the benefits to all participating nations of free trade and open markets. Then Mr. Blanco spoke about the Mexican commitment to a hemispheric free trade area in the long-term and bilateral trade agreements similar to NAFTA with some of its other neighbors. All speakers also took questions from the audience. close
