Members of the House Government Reform & Oversight Committee and Representative Bill Clinger, R-Pennsylvania, Committee Chairman, debated the final language on the committee’s report on its investigation into the firing of seven officials in the White House Travel Office shortly after President Clinton’s inauguration. The report accuses the President and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton of firing these people for political reasons and for trying to cover up an internal investigation and to obstruct an independent review of these firings. The Democratic members, except for Representative Paul Kanjorski, D-Pennsylvania walked out of the hearing in protest after which the Republicans approved the report by a strictly partisan vote. The Democratic members returned after the vote to debate how the committee will hear further testimony from Craig Livingstone. close
