President William Jefferson Clinton announced the setting aside of about 1.7 million acres in southern Utah which contains one of the largest remaining coal reserves in the United States. The area will be called the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. In his remarks, he spoke about beauty of the area and argued that he and others were saving this area for future generations as President Theodore Roosevelt and others had saved the Grand Canyon for his generation. The ceremony was held at nearly the same spot where President Roosevelt used the same law, the Antiquities Act, to preserve the Grand Canyon in 1908, also without congressional approval. close
