Defense Secretary William Perry announced that Lockheed Martin and Boeing would each build two prototype fighters during the next phase of the Joint Strike Fighter program, which would be used by the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marines as well as the Royal Navy. This next phase would cost about $2.2 billion and the winning proposal would be selected in 2001. The planes are scheduled to enter service in 2008. After Secretary Perry and the other leaders left, several Department of Defense experts on the program took more detailed questions from reporters. close
