American Bar Association hosted a panel discussion with counsel that had previously participated in investigations into government officials including former Watergate investigator Earl Silbert and former Iran-Contra independent counsel Lawrence Walsh. They discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the current office of an independent counsel both in legal and political terms. The independent counsel statute allows the attorney general to select an outside attorney to investigate allegations of wrongdoing by executive branch officials. They also took questions from the audience. close
