The chairman and ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee and the five economists on the Consumer Price Index Commission released the committee’s final report on proposed changes to how the Consumer Price Index is computed. They argued that the index has been overestimating inflation by about 1 percent for several years due to various flaws in the index. The index is computed by taking the average prices of certain products and services from around the nation. It is used to provide cost of living increases to government payments, such as social security. close
