President Clinton appointed Senator Cohen, a Republican, to be Defense Secretary, Ambassador Albright to be the first female Secretary of State, Anthony Lake to be Director of Intelligence and Samuel Berger to be national security adviser. The president stressed that he has appointed qualified, dedicated people who would serve the nation well and that his choices were not politically motivated. The nominees expressed their gratitude to the president and their hopes for their new roles in the administration.
