After the release of the ethics report concerning Speaker Gingrich, the committee held a public hearing and heard from committee counsel Cole and the speaker’s counsel. Following the hearing, the members of the committee will deliberate in closed session on a punishment for the speaker and make a recommendation to the U.S. House of Representatives. The full House is scheduled to vote on the matter January 21. If the Speaker is reprimanded, he may retain his office. If he is censured by the House, he must step down under the rules of the Republican conference in the House of Representatives. close
