C-SPAN’s Washington Journal examined current events and political issues through reviews of newspapers, interviews, and viewer comments. In the first segment USA Today’s Congressional correspondent Bill Welch discussed Congress’s current agenda. In the second segment Kathleen McGinty, the chair of the Council on Environmental Quality, discussed the preservation of rivers in the American West. In the Newspaper Roundtable segment syndicated columnist Samuel Francis and Charles Peters, editor-in-chief of The Washington Monthly, discussed the news articles of the day, which they found most important. In the fourth segment Senators Phil Gramm (R-TX) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) discussed President Bill Clinton’s budget proposal. In the final segment John Sewell, of the Overseas Development Council, and James Sheehan, of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, discussed the foreign aid portions of the budget proposal. C-SPAN’s Steve Scully hosted and moderated the viewer calls and guest discussions. close
