Committee members heard testimony from a State Department official and the two leaders of Colombian anti-drug forces concerning U.S. assistance to Colombia. The Colombian leaders urged the members to persuade President Clinton to lift the ban on aid to President Samper’s government, which the U.S. believes is rife with corruption. Mr. Gelbard stressed that this decertification will probably continue, but that it has not affected the soldiers and policemen directly involved in anti-drug efforts. Translation into English was by translator. close
