Committee members heard testimony from cable and direct broadcast satellite executives and a consumer advocate concerning competition in the cable television market. Witnesses testified about the best ways to ensure fair competition, lower cable rates and high quality in the wake of deregulation enacted through the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Mr. Murdoch is pushing Congress to quickly allow his new direct broadcast venture with a Colorado satellite company into the market and cable companies want to ensure he and other direct broadcast operators have to follow the same federal regulations as they must. close
