Former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Colin Powell testified about Gulf War illnesses, the possible exposure of U.S. troops to chemical weapons, and the steps the Defense Department took to avoid such exposure during the war. He said that he and senior military commanders received no warnings from the CIA that chemical weapons might be present in southern Iraq when Iraqi ammunition dumps were blown up. He expressed anger at disclosures that the CIA had detailed intelligence before and during the war regarding chemical weapons at the Kamisiyah ammunition dump. He also said that veterans who believe their illnesses were the result of Gulf War service should be given the benefit of the doubt. close
