Senate Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Antitrust, Business Rights, and Competition members heard testimony from an American Airlines representative and several competitors concerning the implications of the proposed alliance between British Airways and American Airlines. In the alliance the airlines would coordinate service, schedules and fares. Dave Schwarte, representing American Airlines, argued that the agreement would enhance competition because American would give up slots at London’s Heathrow airport. The other witnesses and several senators questioned whether such an agreement could be approved between two carriers which already held such a large share of U.S.-London air travel. close
