The committee heard testimony from Acting Director Tenet on his nomination to be director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He had been a national security adviser to both Presidents Reagan and Bush. He said that the agency must change its focus from the Cold War to new threats such as terrorism and drug trafficking. He also said he would consult regularly with congressional oversight committees. He was also asked about the Aldrich Ames spy scandal and Persian Gulf War intelligence reports on chemical weapons. He said that covert actions would continue but must remain part of broader military or diplomatic efforts. close
