Mr. Crouch spoke about the historical and political controversy over multiculturalism, especially in education. This was part of a conference honoring Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., who has written a book on the subject called The Disuniting of America. Mr. Crouch said that Mr. Schlesinger talked about “what is really happening rather than what some of us want to be happening.” Mr. Gitlin talked about the argument between America as it would like to be and America as it is regarding race. The panelists held a discussion following the presentations. close
