Subcommittee members heard testimony from Secretary Babbitt on the Department of Interior fiscal year 1998 budget proposal. Congress appropriated $6.2 billion in FY 1997 and the department is requesting an increase to $6.6 billion for FY 1998. Secretary Babbitt indicated that the department’s budget mainly goes to personnel and salary considerations. He also outlined the direction in which the department is going and said the department solves problems best by “looking at the large picture” and more conservation values and policies are initiated and implemented that way. close
