Mr. Broder moderated this panel on the declining importance of class in the U.S. After the opening presentation by Ms. Sawhill and a response by Mr. Lipset, there was a general discussion among all the participants. They examined how much class origins determines a citizen’s chances to succeed economically and how the growth of opportunity through improvements in education and other areas and the slower economic growth of the last thirty years have affected and will affect the role class plays in determining a citizen’s chances of success. Ms. Sawhill and Daniel P. McMurrer are the authors of a recent study on the subject. close
