President Clinton spoke to graduates of the University of California, San Diego. In his remarks, he stressed the importance of diversity in U.S. society and the need for people of different ethnic backgrounds to work together to improve society. The previous week he appointed an advisory panel to conduct a yearlong study of the issue. The president talked about the diverse talents of all of our citizens and stressed that economic success and nonmaterial progress is incumbent upon equality and fairness. He said “now is the time to build one America.” close
