President Clinton spoke before the opening of the Summit of the Eight and talked about his vision of the role the United States plays in the world now and in the future. Prior to his speech the president was presented with a gift from two young children. The president talked about the goals of the upcoming summit and a new economic strategy for the United States that calls for reducing the deficit, investing more in our people and opening the world for trade. The president reviewed the economic achievements of his administration and talked about the need for opening up markets to new economies and to “charge into the future and embrace the world.” close
