Mr. Fotis and Mr. LaPierre expressed their gratitude for the Supreme Court’s decision to declare the background check requirement portion of the Brady law unconstitutional by a five to four vote. The suit was brought by Arizona law enforcement officials who argued that they should not be required to perform background checks by the federal government because they did not have the resources to do so. They also stressed that the local police officers must be used to catch criminals not in checking backgrounds on mostly law-abiding citizens. Before them, Mr. Chitwood expressed his disappointment with the decision and stressed that he and other police chiefs will continue to perform background checks on those individuals who wish to purchase firearms. close
