Alexis de Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont visited Niskayuna, New York on their through the Hudson River valley from New York City in July 1831. Phoebe Bender talked about the history of the Shaker movement and Professor Bender Benfield talked about Tocqueville’s observations on U.S. religion in the 1830s by telephone. Present day Niskayuna is not on the site of the town named Niskayuna which Tocqueville visited. Instead Colonie, New York is the current area which Tocqueville visited as Niskayuna. close
