Before leaving for Pittsburgh to speak to the NAACP, President Clinton announced his nomination to succeed General Shalikashvili as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Hugh Shelton. The president reviewed Gen. Shelton’s distinguished military career and said he had the experience and intelligence to serve the United States in this new capacity should he be confirmed by the Senate.
