In a portion beginning at about 1:20 p.m., senators debated legislation to save $135 billion in entitlement programs over the next five years as part of a balanced budget plan. They stressed the importance of balancing the budget and controlling entitlement spending and thanked the administration and congressional efforts to reach an agreement on the budget. The Senate passed the measure by an 85 to 15 vote. close
