Participants briefed reporters on their opposition to NASA launch of the Cassini space probe, the unmanned Saturn mission scheduled for launch on October 6. The probe will carry 72 pounds of Plutonium 238, a radioactive material, as fuel for the long voyage. The participants argued that this could harm millions if there was an accident. NASA has stated that independent experts have verified that the craft is safe and that if an accident occurred, the radiation exposure would be not be significant enough to impact people’s health. close
