Committee members continued the investigation into campaign fund-raising abuses in the last election. Members debated what the videotapes released by the White House show about campaign finance practices and abuses. Senator Thompson showed several tapes to demonstrate the fund-raising practices of the Clinton White House while Senator Glenn showed tapes of President Reagan to support his argument that presidents, and members of Congress for that matter, have supporters into their offices and thank them for their support. Many Republicans stressed that these tapes show the probability of foreign campaign contributions and efforts to evade spending limits through issue advocacy advertisements paid for by the Democratic National Committee. Democrats countered that Republicans also accepted foreign money and that Bob Dole proposed to use issue advocacy advertisements in a similar manner. close
