The complete title of the panel discussion is “The Impact of Government on the Arts: Money, Legislation, and Censorship.” The issue arose after a controversial touring exhibit of Roger Mapplethorpe photographs was cancelled by the Corcoran Gallery in Washington. The exhibit, which included homoerotic photographs, was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. In response to the exhibit several legislators, most notably Senator Jesse Helms, proposed legislation to prohibit the use of government money to fund obscene art. close
