Secretary Cohen and General Shelton briefed reporters on U.S. military forces available in the Persian Gulf and the president’s announcement earlier today that he was sending the USS George Washington and some support ships to increase U.S. military presence in the area. They stressed they hoped for a diplomatic resolution to the standoff, but that the military will continue to prepare for a military response should the president order one. close
