Republican Governors' Association chairman Governor Branstad led a plenary session on education initiatives in various states. Ms. Tate, a former press secretary to first lady Nancy Reagan, moderated a discussion of education needs and the role of government. Governors described education programs in their states. Professor Schmidt discussed the shortcomings in U.S. education compared with that of other countries. Rep. Hoekstra is chairman of the House Education Oversight Subcommittee. close
