Weinberger is questioned further about his opposition to arms sales to Iran. Weinberger says that the transfer of U.S. arms by Israel, without official U.S. permission, was a violation of U.S. law. He also says it went against Operation Staunch, the administration’s effort to convince other counties not to sell arms to Iran or Iraq. The second phase of Iran-contra public hearings then concludes with closing statements from the leaders of the House and Senate committees. Rep. Cheney, the ranking minority member of the House committee, and Sen. Rudman, the Republican vice-chairman of the Senate committee, as well as committee chaimen Hamilton and Inouye, make statements. close
