President Clinton traveled to the University of Illinois to outline in greater detail some of the initiatives he mentioned in his State of the Union address the previous night. Vice President Gore introduced the president very enthusiastically as he trumpeted the accomplishments of the Clinton administration. In his remarks, the president focused on making a college education more affordable, but also mentioned other topics, such as the importance of technological research, the need for a full debate over the future of Social Security and the need to address global warming. The president then moved to the Intramural Physical Education Building to address the overflow crowd of students who could not be accommodated at Assembly Hall, where he first spoke. close
