Beginning at about 2:05 p.m., senators discussed a proposal to rename the Washington National Airport in suburban Washington, DC, to the Ronald Reagan National Airport in honor of the former president. Supporters of the bill, S. 1295, said it was appropriate to honor the president in this manner and opponents said local government and citizens did not want the name change. Supporters of the bill wanted the bill to become law in time for President Reagan’s birthday, February 7. close
