articipating by telephone, Mr. Freedom spoke about U.S. Supreme Court Judge Alito's rulings on the death penalty. He discussed Rompilla v. Beard, a 2004 case on the effectiveness of counsel in death penalty cases. Alito wrote for the majority in affirming a death sentence handed down after the defendant charged his defense lawyers with failing to review records that might have helped mitigate the sentence. In June 2005 the Supreme Court reversed the Alito decision in a 5-4 vote. Justice O'Connor cast the deciding vote. close
