Michelle Alexander talked about her book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, in which she argues that the "get tough on crime" policies that began in the early 1970s were enacted in an effort to push back the gains of the Civil Rights Movement. This effort, she said, had been successful. Professor Alexander spoke at the University of Tennessee at an event hosted by the university's Africana Studies Program. close
