Center for Strategic and International Studies, on U.S. NATO relations. January 27, 2014. Responding to my question: "Earlier this month, former Air Force Chief of Staff, Gen. Norton Schwartz, stated that, without financial buy in from NATO partners, money for F35 nuclear integration with the B61 tactical nuclear bomb should probably realign to other priorities. The recent omnibus cut funds for an F35 nuclear capability. It seems the U.S. is moving away from a F35 nuclear role. Considering European fighter jets capable of deploying the B61 right now will be retired, and the F35 may not carry the B61, our NATO partners won’t be able to deliver that bomb in the future, and carry out their nuclear mission. So, I’m wondering, should our NATO allies, as Gen. Schwartz talked about, financially contribute to modernizing the B61, or should the U.S. eventually remove the B61 from Europe?" close
