On March 4, 2007, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama gave the keynote address at a "Bloody Sunday" commemoration. Using Biblical references, he said that the current "Joshua generation" must praise the 1965 civil rights marchers who were responsible for African Americans being able to rise to high office. Obama would go on to win the Democratic Party's nomination in July 2008 and win the presidency in the fall that year. close
