The case resulted from a protest on March 2, 1961, when 187 peaceful civil rights protestors were arrested at the South Carolina State House. In Edwards v. South Carolina the Supreme Court of the United States held that the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution forbids state government officials from forcing a crowd to disperse when they are otherwise legally marching in front of a state house. close
