House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R) and former Trump administration National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien spoke about the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and U.S. policy regarding China. The discussion covered the Biden administration’s decision to withdraw from Afghanistan, Americans remaining in the country, Afghan refugees coming to the United States, and fighting terrorism in the Middle East. Leader McCarthy and Mr. O’Brien also talked about China’s growing strength and its policies toward Taiwan. The Senate Select Intelligence Committee held a hearing to examine threats posed to U.S. national security from China. National security experts, including former National Counterintelligence and Security Center William Evanina, testified on a range of topics that included intellectual property theft, xenophobia and ethnic profiling, disinformation regarding COVID-19, semiconductor manufacturing, and the need to invest in future technologies. They also touched on the acquisition and theft of data, including DNA and genomic data.

Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the Biden administration’s policy toward Turkey. She answered questions on a variety of topics including, human rights concerns, sanctions against Turkey for purchasing and deploying a Russian missile defense system, and the guarantee of free and safe elections in the country. The undersecretary also discussed Turkish President Erdogan’s push for a two-state solution with Cyprus, focusing on his recent visit to the U.N.-controlled, abandoned Cyprus town of Varosha, which is in direct violation of U.N. Security Council Resolutions. Secretary Nuland also took questions on the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline and the recent negotiations between the U.S. and Germany on the project.
