    President Obama Remarks at Hiroshima Peace Memorial

    President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe delivered remarks following a wreath-laying ceremony at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. President Obama said the U.S. and Japan had made choices since the Hiroshima bombing that should give the world hope. He also spoke about the alliance between the U.S. and Japan and about stopping the spread of nuclear weapons around the world. He concluded by saying the world needed to change its mindset about war and work toward peaceful cooperation. President Obama was the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima, site of the first U.S. nuclear attack in 1945.

    Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump held a campaign rally with supporters at the San Diego Convention Center. He discussed immigration policy, military veterans, and the Trump University lawsuit. The California presidential primary would take place on Tuesday, June 7, 2016.

    Military Operations in Iraq and Syria

    Operation Inherent Resolve Spokesperson Colonel Steve Warren briefed reporters at the Pentagon via satellite from Baghdad on U.S. military operations against ISIL* militants in Iraq and Syria. Colonel Warren said operations to liberate Fallujah, Iraq, were now underway, and the coalition was supporting the effort with airstrikes and artillery fire. He also addressed concerns over photographs showing U.S. special forces wearing the insignia of Kurdish troops. He said the decision was unauthorized and inappropriate given the “political sensitivities” around the issue. Asit would be his last press briefing from Iraq, Colonel Warren was also acknowledged for his service.

    2016 Hurricane Season Outlook

    The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) briefed reporters on the 2016 hurricane season outlook. They predicted the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June through November, would most likely be “near normal.” Their data predicted a 70 percent likelihood of 10 to 16 storms of which four to eight would become hurricanes, and one to four would likely become major hurricanes. The briefing was held at the at the NOAA Satellite Operations Facility in Suitland, Maryland.
