    Congressional Democrats on Meeting with Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton

    House Democratic leaders spoke with reporters following their meeting with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the presumptive 2016 Democratic presidential nominee. She had come to the Capitol, her first visit to since securing her party’s nomination, to rally their support ahead of the party’s Democratic convention in July. The representatives talked about what she told them, including her plan for a 50-state campaign strategy and the need for party unity. Among the questions asked was the potential of Representative Xavier Becerra (D-CA), as a vice-presidential running mate. He said he did not know if he was being vetted for the position.

    Senate Debate on Gun Violence

    In response to the June 12, 2016, mass shooting at an Orlando, Florida, gay nightclub, Senator Christopher Murphy (D-CT) held the Senate floor for nearly 15 hours to talk about gun violence in the U.S. He called for legislation that would require background checks for private gun sales and a ban of gun sales to suspected terrorists on “no-fly” lists. He was joined by several other Senate colleagues.
