    Senate Hearing on Bank Oversight

    CEOs from the country’s six largest banks, including Jamie Dimon from JPMorgan Chase, Jane Fraser from Citigroup, and Brian Moynihan from Bank of America, testified at a Senate Banking Committee hearing on regulatory and oversight matters in the banking industry. The witnesses addressed several issues, including on investment in affordable housing, industry regulation, mortgage lending and equity concerns, the economy, cybersecurity, and serving rural and under-banked communities. They also touched on fraud concerns related to peer-to-peer payment platforms, such as Zelle, and how the banks protect their costumers from scams and fraudulent transactions.

    President Biden Remarks on Democracy

    “We must be honest with each other and with ourselves,” said President Biden, continuing, “Too much of what’s happening in our country today is not normal. Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic.” His remarks came as he spoke on democracy and “the soul of the nation,” from Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The president stressed the importance of upholding democracy for all, and asked the nation “to come together, unite behind the single purpose of defending our democracy, regardless of your ideology.”

    House Hearing on Access to Abortion Services

    “Pro-choice” and “pro-life” advocates testified at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on access to abortions and the impact overturning Roe v. Wade would have on that access. This hearing convened after Politico published a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion indicating that the majority of the justices would overturn the landmark decision that gave women abortion rights, and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which reaffirmed Roe. The case before the court at the time of this hearing was Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case concerning a Mississippi law that bans abortions past the 20th week of pregnancy and which the directly challenged Roe.

    Former President Trump Speaks at America First Policy Institute Summit

    Former President Trump said it’s “so unfair” to see what the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol is doing to people who did no enter the Capitol and “the way they are being tortured and handled so horribly,” as he addressed the committee’s investigation. His remarks came during his keynote address at the America First Policy Institute’s summit in Washington, D.C. During his speech, he spoke of several topics, including immigration, inflation and energy prices, transgender athletes in women’s sports, and the 2020 election. While urging for harsher penalties for drug offenses, the former president suggested the death penalty for drug dealers, saying, “you execute a drug dealer, and you’ll save 500 lives.”

    Eighth Hearing on Investigation of January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol

    “For 187 minutes on January 6, this man of unbridled destructive energy could not be moved,” said January 6 Committee Chair Bennie Thompson (D-MS) of President Trump’s perceived unwillingness to act on that day. His remarks came in his opening statement during the eighth hearing of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. During her closing testimony, Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) spoke of the former president’s supporters, saying, “he is preying on their patriotism,” and that “on January 6th, Donald Trump turned their love of country into a weapon against our Capitol, and our Constitution.” Testifying before the committee on President Trump’s actions and response to the attack on the U.S. Capitol were former Deputy National Security Adviser Matthew Pottinger and former White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Matthews, who both tendered their resignations on January 6, 2021.

    First Hearing on Investigation of January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol

    The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol held the first of a series of hearings. Committee Chair Bennie Thompson (D-MS) said, “Donald Trump was at the center of this conspiracy,” and that the former president “spurred a mob of domestic enemies of the Constitution to march down to the Capitol and subvert American democracy.” Addressing her Republican colleagues directly, Committee Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) said that those who “are defending the indefensible, there will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.” U.S. Capitol Police Officer Caroline Edwards, who was knocked unconscious during the initial breach, and filmmaker Nick Quested, who was filming the Proud Boys and the rally, shared their stories from the attack. The committee showed a video of the attack with scenes outside and inside the Capitol, much of which came from police cameras, and video testimony gathered during months of investigation.
